I have had varied careers, including periods as a curator of medieval manuscripts, as mayor of a Somerset town, and as head of a district general hospital; I qualified both as an archivist and as a photographer. My family comes from south-east England, although my grandfather moved to Cork City in 1902, and for many years I divided my time between England and Ireland. I have now settled near Castletownbere, on the Beara peninsula, and spend my time in print-making, writing, and photography.

My own pleasure is in form and tone, geometry and colour: what matters to me is the visual delight, irrespective of subject. I feel that the artist, in any medium, cannot enhance the landscape, or the model, but tries, by isolating and interpreting particular elements, to convey new perceptions, moods, and ideas.
